1LT Felix B. Hernaiz was born on May 7, 1970, a native of the Bronx, New York, received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserve through the Army Direct Commissioning on 25 February 2008.

1LT Hernaiz entered the military in June, 1999. 1 LT Hernaiz’s military assignments started with the 800th Military Police Brigade (HHC), 310th Military Police Battalion, 340th Military Police Company, 455 Military Police Brigade Liaison Detachment, 800th Military Police Brigade (HHC), 389th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB/HHD), and his last assignment was with the 75th Training Command, Atlantic Division.

1LT Hernaiz has served in a few operational and leadership positions with in the military to include: 800th Military Police Brigade Commander’s Aide -de-Camp, 800th Military Brigade Saftey Officer, 340th Military Police Company Rear Detachment Commander, and Saftey Officer. O.I.C. For Provost Marshal General of Iraq, Corrections Assessment Transition Team (C.A.T.T.) under the 455th Military Police Brigade Liaison Detachment, 389th CSSB HHD Commander, later appointed the OIC of the S-4, and lastly assigned at the 75th Training Division as the Plans and Scenario Officer for the G-3/5/7.

1LT Hernaiz graduated from Basic Officer Leadership Course II-Infantry Officer Basic Course at Ft. Benning, Georgia in December 2009 and then graduated from Basic Officer Leadership Course III-Military Police Officer Basic Course at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in March 2010 with additional certification in Forensic Evidence Collection and Exploitation.

1 LT Hernaiz’s awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal w/2-Bronze OLC, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal w/4-Stars, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Army Medal w/1-Bronze Hour Glass, w/Numeral 2, and “M” device, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Ribbon-w/Numeral 2, Army Oversees Training Ribbon-w/Numeral 2, NYS Defense of Liberty Ribbon-w/WTC device.

1LT Felix B. Hernaiz was the only child born to Lucia and Regino Hernaiz, a Korean War Veteran both retirees of New York City civil service. 1LT Felix B. Hernaiz attended St. Peter and Paul Elementary School and went on to attend Cardinal Hayes High School, after which he graduated from Herbert H. Lehman College with a Bachelor’s of Science in Anthropology, Biology and Chemistry with a concentration in Veterinary studies in Bovine & Equine ecology and agriculture in February 1998.

1LT Hernaiz was a a Campus Police Officer for the City University of New York (C.U.N.Y) with prior employment as an Investigator with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, New York City’s Sheriff’s Office, New York City Police Department, Licensed as a special education teacher and Investigator for the New York City Board of Education; a commitment of civil service for over twenty-five years. 1LT Hernaiz was married 7 years to Leslie M. Lind-Hernaiz and a father of 2 girls, Zahira Mari Hernaiz, who serves as an Angel of God in heaven and Amira Victoria Hernaiz the light of his eyes.

He survived by his loving wife Leslie and daughter Amira, dedicated mother Lucia, mother in law Iris Robles, and countless family, friends and co-workers. He is preceded in death by his father Regino Hernaiz and half brother Reggie Hernaiz

To know him was to love him. His tragic and unexpected passing has left a hole in many hearts. 1LT Hernaiz made the world a better place by being in it, he was the epitome of honor, dedication, loyalty, and respect. He loved hard and played hard. A beacon of light truly went out on December 8, 2020 when he entered the spirit world. He will forever be missed beyond words and loved beyond measure.
