Obituary for Lenore Clara Dittmar

Lenore Clara Dittmar of Woodlawn, the Bronx, NY, passed away on December 5, 2020, at the age of 81. Lenore was born in Boyne City, Michigan, the second daughter of Herman Dittmar and Lydia Golke Dittmar. She grew up in Petoskey, Michigan and attended Petoskey High School, where she sang in the choir, played tympani in the concert band, served as a class officer and was a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation from PHS in 1957, she attended Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, where she served on the Student Council. She received a Bachelor's degree in Education from “Valpo” in 1961.

After teaching school in Seaford, Long Island, Lenore and a friend made their way into Manhattan, where they each found a teaching position at St. Matthew Lutheran School, the oldest Lutheran school in the United States. Lenore, a born teacher, taught second grade there, where she introduced the children to classical music. Lenore later became a secretary in the district office of the Lutheran Church in Manhattan, moved on and subsequently became an executive secretary at the Securities Industry & Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) located on Wall Street, situated near the former World Trade Center, from which she retired.

Lenore LOVED New York and loved playing tour guide when family and friends came to visit. She particularly loved the arts, especially ballet. She probably saw every ballet ever presented at Lincoln Center, and she once owned a pair of ballet slippers owned by one of her favorite dancers. She was also a fan of some of Wagner's operas. She was a talented artist in her own right, as exhibited by her many drawings and paintings.

Lenore was incredibly generous, thoughtful, loving, and caring, with examples far too numerous to mention. She approached life philosophically, and had frequent discussions on wide-ranging topics. At the same time, she often approached life with an engaging sense of humor. She was a good listener and trusted confidante and will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

Lenore was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Lydia Dittmar, brother Raymond Dittmar, and sister Janice Dittmar. She is survived by sisters Doreatha Brueggemann (Bridgeport CT) and Margaret Dittmar (Grand Rapids MI) and brothers Norman Dittmar (Rochester MN), Paul Dittmar and his wife Janet (Manhattan KS), and James Dittmar and Grant Dittmar (Petoskey MI). She is also survived by her niece Ann Brueggemann (Shelton CT) and nephew Douglas Brueggemann and his wife Candice and daughter Marisa (Boynton Beach FL).

Lenore’s cremation remains will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery, the beautiful cemetery right across the street from her apartment. Due to Covid limitations, interment and memorial will be private at the convenience of the family. Contributions in her memory may be made to Valparaiso University, 1100 Campus Drive South, Valparaiso IN, 46383.
