Legacy of Lucilo (Jaime) Olivera

On Monday, December 1, 2020, Jaime Olivera, passed-away at the age of 92. Jaime was a loving husband, father of four children, and grandfather to five grandchildren.

Jaime Olivera was born on June 18, 1928 in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico to Pablo Olivera and Esperanza Pagan Olivera. He grew up on his family’s mountaintop farm overlooking the beautiful valley of Penuelas. Jaime was the second eldest son of the family and had three brothers and five sisters. His mother died when Jaime was sixteen years of age and he assumed the role of big brother. His father later remarried, and he had two more brothers and another sister. In 1956, Jaime left his homeland of Puerto Rico and moved to New York with his younger brother Juan. He moved in with his mother’s sister, aunt Cruzita, and his cousins until he and Juan were able to find employment and an apartment.

Throughout the time of bachelorhood, in the late fifties, Jaime lived in Pennsylvania and Florida. He traveled the country using his farming skills to find employment to pay for his travels. He shared spirited stories of his trips with his family and friends, a glimpse into the past and what it was like living in America in those days.

In 1959, he met Esmeralda Irizarry and they married on January 30, 1960 in New York City. Esme and Jaime were married for over sixty years. They raised four children, Esperanza (Espe), Wanda, Richard and Jo.

Jaime had a passion for music and was an avid guitar player; he passed that love on to his son and grandsons. The Olivera household was always a music haven. Jaime and his brothers were all musicians, they would gather and play their instruments and engage the family in sing alongs. Jaime also loved to play billiards, bird watch, and garden. He was known to have a beautiful garden at his home in Maybrook, New York. He especially loved his roses.

He was also known for his quick wit, funny stories, infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit. Jimmy, as he was known in Maybrook, had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to share a laugh. Jimmy could chat with anyone or just sit quietly and listen.

Jaime Olivera worked at Goldwater Memorial Hospital for over thirty-five years and retired in 1992.
