Obituary for Pauline Jones

Pauline Laverne Jones
January 7, 1933 - August 10, 2022

Pauline Laverne Jones, age 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. She was born January 7, 1933 in Richmond, VA to Reverend Cornelius Best and Lucinda Reed. She attended Maggie L. Walker Governor’s High School as a teenager.
Pauline was united in holy matrimony to Kenneth Jones on October 26, 1953 in New York, NY. This union was blessed with five children: Wellington, Gerald, Lorraine, Curtis, and Renee.
She was a graduate of The City University of New York and earned her University and College Labor Education Association Certificate from Penn State in July of 1995. She worked as an Administrative Assistant with The New York City Law Department, supporting the lawyers that pursue justice, provide legal representation, and draft local and state legislation. She provided superb service for over 50 years, being recognized with several awards, including the Law Department Longevity Award presented by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in 2009. For much of her career, she faithfully served as a Local 1549 Chapter Chair NYC Law Department, 1549 Delegate, DC37 Delegate and Chairperson of Local 1549 Election Committee. For half a century, she fought tirelessly for safe work conditions, fair pay, and improved benefits for hard-working NYC public employees.
A devoted Catholic, she was an active member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in New York, NYC, a parish she attended multiple times a week.
A civil rights and political activist, she walked with Martin Luther King, Jr. in the fight for equal rights for minorities, and actively campaigned for the democratic party.
Her generosity was immeasurable, and extended beyond family and friends to the disenfranchised, underserved, and underrepresented. The list of causes she loyally supported is extensive. As a breast cancer survivor, she participated in the Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure every year- even in her twilight years.
She enjoyed dancing, sewing and traveling, - having traveled the world with family, friends and her fellow union members. She will be best remembered for her giving nature, humor, honesty, strength, and vivacity. She was a mother, aunt, and grandmother to many more than those that shared her bloodline- giving love, advice and “a talking to” with a unique combination of understanding and directness.
She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth, sons Sgt. Wellington, Gerald, Curtis, daughter Lorraine and grandson Curtis Thomas Jr. She is survived by her precious daughter Renee, cousins Willnette, Sharon, Eugene, and Willie Jr., grandchildren Corey, Bakari (Mark), Damien, Laressa, Tiffany, Curcinda, Jermel, Tomicqua Scherri, Tahisha (Keith), Shodiah (Arville), eleven great-grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends.
In keeping with Pauline’s wishes, her remains have been cremated. A memorial service will be held from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Thomas C. Montera, Inc. Funeral Home 1848 Westchester Avenue, Bronx, NY 10472.
Friends and family are encouraged to make donations to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in Pauline’s honor.
