Ram Ram Sita Ram, Goodnight, Aslam Kium my brothers and sisters and shalom. Teekaram Mooteram, my father, known as Balraj or Raj, Son of the late Gitanjalie and Mr. Mooteram was born in Canje-Berbice, Guyana on February 20th, 1962 passed away on July 10th 2020 in the Bronx, N.Y. My father moved to the Bronx in 1990, followed by his children Andrena, Glory, and his wife. His daughter Geeta was then later born in 1997. Balraj worked as a superintendent in 3rd Avenue/149th street, where his job there ended up spanning his entire lifetime. Through his career there he was able to provide for his family and build to achieve the American Dream. My dad was the epitome of a family man. His children were the light of his life, but his love didn’t stop there, he considered all of his nieces, nephews and grandchildren his own, which resulted in him being infamously known as Balraj daddy. He had a nickname for everyone, from his daughters being his baby elephants to Kajal being his little donkey. My dad was known for his humor and straight forward attitude. You had to have tough skin to understand him, and he raised all of us to understand tough love will always make you stronger. He would never sugar coat a thing, and that’s exactly why people loved him. He always said it like it is. Besides all of the children who looked up to him so fondly, my dad’s siblings were huge pillars in his life. They were more than just his brothers and sisters, they were his best friends. He would do anything for his brothers and sisters, from dropping off his infamous duck curry on the weekends, lending a hand with home improvements to planning trips to the blue pool – nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family. There are so many unique things about my dad that made him who he was. - He loved gold. You could never catch him without a ring on every finger and a couple gold chains around his neck. His style was iconic with his sweater vests and shorts that he loved so much. He never wore a pair of jeans a day in his life. He would shave EVERY morning, and never forget his hair gel and comb. - - My dad loved to dance, Sundar popo and Ramdew Chaitoe were the key to getting him to bust out his signature dance move of placing his hands behind his back and hopping on one leg. - He was an aggressive driver. I’ve heard my dad curse out more people at stoplights than I can count, everyone to him was a mad ass who didn’t know how to drive. - Besides his love for people, he also loved his plants. My dad had a green thumb that could make anything grow. My daughter, Kajal, has now inherited the responsibility of his garden- My dad's cooking was the best in the family. I will miss his goat curry, pepperpot and kitree. His goat curry will live on through his daughter Glory. - He loved God. All Gods. He was a practicing hindu, but respected, appreciated and accepted all faiths. My dad was hard headed. He never wanted to let anyone know he was struggling, whether it was physically or emotionally – he always put on a brave face for those around him. Geeta was his baby, he constantly hid his pain to make sure she was always okay. He was our rock. His house was always the hub for everyone to gather and create timeless memories that I know many of you hold dear. I need andrena to tell me how she feels so we can conclude it based off of her closing emotions.
